Ask MetaFilter discussion on sane solutions for book clutter | 43 Folders

"On kind of a meta note: To some extent, I think de-cluttering involves recognizing that regret is part of life, and being OK with that. Yes, I’ve given away books that I now often wish I still owned. But I’ve also screwed up relationships, made iffy career choices, etc. — you suck it up and move on. If you try to cling to every single thing (material, spiritual, or emotional) that you might need one day in the totally hypothetical future, you’re going to end up bogged down in a lot of stuff."

Incredible Wiimote Hack Creates Multitouch Display

"This has to be one of the most amazing hardware hacks ever. Using a Nintendo Wii remote and some software that he ginned up himself, Johnny Chung Lee of Carnegie Mellon University took a few ballpoint pens, replaced them with IR lights, and presto! Since the Wii tracks IR lights, Lee found that practically any surface -- a projector screen, a tabletop, an LCD screen could be turned into a multi-touch screen reminiscent of the iPod Touch or Microsoft Surface."

Recueillement

Loin d'eux. Vois se pencher les défuntes Années,
Sur les balcons du ciel, en robes surannées;
Surgir du fond des eaux le Regret souriant;

Le soleil moribond s'endormir sous une arche,
Et, comme un long linceul traînant à l'Orient,
Entends, ma chère, entends la douce Nuit qui marche.

My Brother is a Supervillain

I saw Spider Man 3 yesterday, and I realized something. My brother is really Harry Osborn. The evidence:

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

They both ride snowboards

Exhibit C
While riding snowboards, they both hit their heads and got amnesia

Exhibit D
They both have ex-roommates who are extremely talented musicians (who knew Peter Parker could play piano and dance?)

Exhibit E
They are both haunted by recycled footage of Willem Dafoe

Exhibit F [new]

NPR : OK and Other Expressions

Morning Edition, March 23, 2007 · On this day in 1839, the expression OK appeared for the first time in a publication — the Boston Morning Post. One possible origin of the phrase is that it was an abbreviation for slang used by teenagers: "Oll Korrect." Other expressions kids made popular at the time: "GTT" stood for Going to Texas and "KY" for "know youse." OK is the only one that survived the centuries.

Two Songs

"Mad World"
--Tears for Fears

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
And their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
'Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

Covered by Gary Jules in Donnie Darko
Lyrics shamefully snagged from AZLyrics

"The Shining"
-- Badly Drawn Boy

Faith pours from your walls, drowning your calls
I've tried to hear, You're not near
Remembering when I saw your face, shining my way, pure timing
Now I've fallen in deep, slow silent sleep
It's killing me, I'm dying

To put a little bit of sunshine in your life
Soleil all over you
warm sun pours over me
Soleil all over you
Warm sun

Now this slick fallen rift, came like a gift
Your body moves ever nearer
And you will dry this tear
Now that we're here, and grieve for me, not history
But now I'm dry of thoughts, wait for the rain
Then it's replaced, sun setting

And suddenly we're in love with everything

Soleil all over you, warm sun pours over me
Soleil all over you
Warm sun
