"Update" - By Cody Walker - Slate Magazine

My latent superpowers, well, they're back:
obliterate a marriage with my mind;
bewitch the president, that lying sack
of—Cody! Take it slow. In time I'll find

—please note, I'm speaking as my therapist—
the equilibrium that time affords.
I've also rerouted (I have a list)
(1) my neural pathways and (2) some fjords.

America's a country for the lonely,
the loony. Whitman said it years ago.
Remember, he could fly and he was only
an editor, a wingéd bearded schmo.

My powers have increased a hundredfold
since you left. Maybe a thousand-, all told.

village voice > arts > Education Supplement Fall 2006 by Rachel Aviv

Although IQ tests fail to really define what intelligence is in the first place (often knowledge gets blurred with ability), most psychologists can agree that they measure something valuable— whatever that is. In the 1920s and '30s, Leta Hollingsworth, a professor at Columbia's Teachers College, followed a group of gifted students and found that they had trouble effectively communicating with those more than 30 IQ points below them. Since then, similar studies with adults have reaffirmed her conclusions. "It can be very lonely," says Linda Gottfredson, a professor at the University of Delaware who studies intelligence. "If you think about the fact that the average is 100, and mentally retarded is about 70, someone at 160 is as far away from the average as someone at 130 is from mentally retarded. You can't say the scale works like this, but it gives you a sense."

"I love a wide variety of Asian foods. Word Origins

But according to Charles Earle Funk (and other sources), hoodlum was the accidental coinage of a newspaper reporter. In a story about a gang of ruffians led by a fellow named Muldoon, the reporter spelled the name as Noodlum to avoid reprisals. The newspaper's compositor misinterpreted the name as Hoodlum.

From http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=20010327

One of the most notorious criminals of the Barbary Coast was Muldoon, who had so much muscle he was hard to arrest. The San Franciso newspaper led a campaign to help clean up the town. But rather than printing his name they put it in backwards = Noodlum. A bit obvious, the reported then changed the N to H = Hoodlum. So every time this criminal's activities were written up, it was as Hoodlum. Soon the name was synonymous with crime and illegal activities.

From http://www.factoidcentral.com/words/H.html#34

If you look really closely at the Family Name History, "dun" means fort. My uncle, also a Tom Muldoon, a Bishop (dec'd) maintained that the literal translation was "defender of the fort". His story, & he had kissed "the stone" was that our ancestors boat was swamped during a contest to prove who was the most loyal to the King of Ireland. The first to put his hand on the King's shoulder as a gesture of loyalty was to be chosen as the "top dog" in his army. Our ancestor apparently cut off his hand and threw it. It hit the King on the shoulder & he was named the "Maolduin" or defender of the fort. The coat of arms features a severed hand.

yWriter - Word Processor for Authors

"I really struggled over my first novel because I wrote whole slabs of text into a great big word processor file and tried to make sense of the whole thing at once. I then tried saving each chapter to individual files with great long descriptive filenames, but moving scenes around was a nuisance and I couldn't get an overview of the whole thing (or easily search for one word amongst 32 files) In the end I realised a dedicated program was the way to go, and yWriter is the result. An outdoor cat lives a more stressful life than an indoor cat, and stress leads to a myriad of physical and psychological disorders. Indoor cats generally live longer and healthier lives than outdoor cats - a fact that cannot be disputed.

Setting Up Your First Home Theater Surround System: Dos and Donts

Try this simple visual test to determine if you have your video image too bright or contrasty. Look at any white area on the screen during scenes from live TV or a movie. It could be the white shirt or blouse on an actor or TV host. Are you able to see detail within the white areas? If you can't, then you are likely running the brightness too high, which washes out fine detail in bright areas. So lower the brightness and/or contrast. There's a reason why control rooms for TV productions and telecasts are always dimly lit: it's because video images on the monitors look best in a dim or darker room and the greatest range of colors and tones can be displayed.

DOA Coming to the Theater Near You

DOA: Dead or Alive, the movie based on the Dead or Alive video game series is set to be released on August 25. The preview images and the trailer point to a more Charlies Angels 2 type fluff than a serious action movie. The girls are also seem friendlier with each other, in odds with the intense competition in the game.

Death Came and Got Me

by Rosie Thomas

I can't,
I can't stop crying.
Every day I'm so afraid of dying.

Death already came and got me.
So I'm not living,
I'm not living anyway.

And who am I supposed to be?
Everybody seems to see except for me
Who cares anyway?
Cause when it's over, it's all over,
And what you gained you throw away.

When will love ever find me?
All my life all I have craved is to be seen.
Who cares anyway?
Cause when it's over, all that matters is the love you gave away.

How To Solder

Soldering is defined as "the joining of metals by a fusion of alloys which have relatively low melting points". In other words, you use a metal that has a low melting point to adhere the surfaces to be soldered together. Soldering is more like gluing with molten metal than anything else. Soldering is also a must have skill for all sorts of electrical and electronics work. It is also a skill that must be taught correctly and developed with practice.

Now, this is by no means a REAL fix for the Firefox memory leak, but it certainly does appear to help it quite a bit. This little fix will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, and as a result it will take up less than 10MB of memory while minimized. So far, from my experiences with using this today, when you maximize Firefox it will obviously increase the memory usage. However, it does not seem to go back up to the insane amount that it was at before minimizing it.
